About Us

While working at MCAS Cherry Point, in 1984, our owner started a part time business known as Thompson Transportation. He then purchased one used 15 passenger van and began transporting fellow employees to and from their work area at MCAS Cherry Point.

This soon developed into a small fleet of six, 15 passengers’ vans, delivering passengers to jobs site aboard MCAS Cherry Point; but he also began weekend and holiday excursions to points like Atlantic City, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and New York City. In 1987, the owner purchased two 46 passenger buses from King’s Bus Lines.  The company was incorporated, and the name was changed to Thompson Travel Services Inc.  We then offered chartered bus services in all states on the East Coast.  In 1990, after six years of service, and vans and buses becoming aged, we chose to close the business. In March 2004, we began operating as Thompson Hauling and Grading, starting with a 1999 International one single axle dump truck.  At that time, we were hauling sand, topsoil, and various types of stone to private homes on a part-time basis. In October of 2004, we purchased a new 43 horsepower Kubota tractor along with a used trailer to transport the tractor. In January of 2005, Thompson Hauling and Grading became a full-time operation, and in February the first Tandem Axle truck was purchased, and it was labeled as truck number RT-1.

In the years of 2005 and 2006, the housing industry was booming and that allowed us to purchase a second truck, which was then number RT-2.  Along with the truck we hired our first full-time driver, Virgil Bufford.  We then started working as a subcontractor for various contracting companies which were doing site work for new housing developments, such as G. E. Carpenter Construction Co. and Trader Construction. In March of 2006, Thompson Hauling and Grading became a Subchapter S Corporation, and the name was changed to R. L. Thompson Company Inc.  With the housing development boom slowing down in 2008, R. L. Thompson Company Inc., transitioned from the housing industry to Heavy Highway Construction. After converting to the Heavy Highway Industry in April of 2008, we replaced RT-1 (Tandem) with a bigger dump truck which was a Quad Axle truck number RT-3.   We also took on new contractors such as S. T. Wooten and Balfour Beatty Corporation.  While taking on more contracts and contractors, we had the ability to purchase several more trucks.    We then purchased two more Quad Axles and a Quint Axle truck.  (RT-4, RT-5, and RT-6)  In 2014, we purchased an additional Quad Axle (RT-7).  With business continuing to grow and R. L. Thompson Company continuing to be blessed we were able to hire additional staff in the office and more truck drivers. In July 2016, we moved from 999 Perrytown Road to our new office and maintenance shop complex currently at 645 Perrytown Road.  In 2017, we purchased a Quint Axle (RT-8); and in 2018, we purchased four more quads (RT-9 thru RT-12).  Lastly, in 2019 we traded out older trucks by selling a few trucks to purchase newer trucks which are now RT-13 thru RT-16.

Our Company has grown from one single axle dump truck in 2004 to a total of ten trucks operating in 2019.
